Realizing that if nothing changed, breaking point couldn't be far away, my husband took me on a surprise weekend break.   It took persuading, but I tore myself away from my daily endeavours.

As we walked along the promenade that July weekend with the summer sun sparkling on the water, I started to relax and my immediate concerns fell away. Then, in a moment of revelation, the penny suddenly dropped. I had quite simply become too immersed in the day-to-day minutiae of my business. I had allowed it to take over my life in a way that simply wasn't healthy for my Company, but worse still... it was starting to impact on those around me too.

 

My family and friends simply couldn't understand why after all these years I was putting in even more time than when I first created the business. And what did I have to show for it all?  To be honest, I couldn't understand it either!

 

The truth was that -- not only was the business becoming detrimental to my health -- it was also failing to add to my wealth too. It was almost as if the harder I worked the less I was achieving.   In reality I felt almost as if I had now life of my own.

I resolved that the time had come
to make some radical changes!

 

Refreshed from my weekend away, I was momentarily able to stand back from my business and see things more clearly.

 

And I seized that moment...

 

On the Monday morning instead of going into my office, I stayed home and started to plan everything that I would change about the way that I managed and operated my business.

 

I quite literally started with a large blank sheet of paper (in fact, several large pieces of paper) which I taped to our kitchen cupboards and walls as I started to write up my new plan...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I tentatively wrote as I started to pin my ideas to the wall.

 


 

I ambitiously added to my second sheet.

 

Quickly followed by I will...

 



After all, I knew that just flying by the seat-of-my-pants wasn't getting me anywhere!

 

 

I scrawled across the page stuck to the fridge/freezer... as my imagination began to run riot. "Why shouldn't my business actually make money", I figured?

 

And as I filled up the space that ran between the microwave and the pantry... writing out my objectives one after another until every square inch of the kitchen cupboards and wall space were used up, I noticed that I'd created a series of really bold statements.

 

Now -- for the first time since starting my business -- I'd written out my mission statement. It might seem crazy to you (though I bet this isn't unique), but this was the very first time that I had ever seriously sat down and thought about not only how I wanted my business to succeed, but also the way I needed my life to be organized and changed.

 

A set of objectives is one thing,
but making them happen is another...

 

This might sound wild to you, but working out what I really wanted to happen within my business was a large part of finding the solutions.  And over the next 3 days I took each of my objectives and worked on a plan to achieve every one of them in turn.

 

It was as if having determined what I wanted from the business, the rest of the plan almost started to write itself!

 

And over the coming weeks and months I put my new business plan in place. Each individual objective required a number of steps and I'm happy to share some of them with you right here and now. For example:

 

I divided up the functions of each individual task and then worked out who would be responsible for them in the future. This great technique will work regardless of whether your business is just you, or a growing team.
 
 
I completely revamped our bookkeeping and accounts system. Not only that, but I started to project the future on a spreadsheet and suddenly I knew where we stood and found that those nasty shocks and surprises quickly became a thing of the past. It was an almost magical experience to be able to quite worrying about what was around the corner.
 
 
Next I measured how I was spending my days and to my horror discovered that almost none of the time was truly profitable! With this information in hand I was able to reschedule my activities making a dramatic difference to our bottom line. Some of these techniques are so blindingly obvious, you'll kick yourself when I let you get sight of them.
 
 
Now I began to delegate tasks. Again, this isn't about how many people you employ, it's about your management style and works regardless of whether you have zero or 50 employees. Hint: Tasks can be delegated to outside organizations, sub-contracted or even sometimes entirely dropped, rather than you doing everything for yourself. And I'll show you how!
 
 
I worked out how to measure and structure each task. I even wrote it all out, which had the benefit of reinforcing the ideas in my mind, as well as providing a practical manual as to how my business would operate in the future.
